10 Days | 9 Nights – Starts 16 May 2019
Tour Dates: 16 May – 25 May 2019

Portugal is the land of the Luistano horse and Nuno Olivera the classical dressage master and everywhere you will see reference to this training.

This tour includes a visit to the Portuguese riding School to watch a training session where the riders will be exercising the horses and they maybe practicing for an upcoming Gala show or training youngsters in hand.

The rest of the week is spent riding beautifully trained Lusitano horses and improving your riding skills.  Lessons at the Equestrian centre are always on a private basis, enabling you to concentrate wholly on what you wish to achieve, whether it be to strengthen your position, improve your lateral work or get the hang of one-time changes.

The venue is stunning and you will have time to relax with a glass of wine in hand.  The food is all locally produced and home cooked and the equestrian centre boasts its own winery.

Enjoy a Dressage holiday at one of the finest Equestrian centres in Portugal and spend a few days in Lisbon the stunning capital city of Portugal.  Lisbon is one of the most vibrant cities in Europe with many historical sights and glorious weather year round.

This is a small hosted group tour with a maximum of only nine riders and non-riders are most welcome.  The tour includes sightseeing in Lisbon, Sintra, Obidos and surrounding areas.  You may choose an intensive programme with two lessons per day, or a more relaxed schedule with one lesson a day.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. Today continue exploring the city.  Like San Francisco in the United States, Lisbon is a city famed for its historic, rattling tram lines.  None are more iconic than Tram 28 which has been working its way up the steep, cobbled roads. St George’s Castle is unquestionably the most visible landmark of Lisbon’s historic centre, standing tall and firm above the streets of the old Alfama District, the great citadel was first built more than 2,000 years ago by the Romans.  Portugal is also famous for tiles and you might like to visit the National Tile Museum, which is dedicated to everything fired in a kiln. (Includes hop on hop off bus)

(B,L,D) Monday 20 May 2019

This morning after breakfast make you way to the equestrian centre. Prior to or during your first lesson you will have an opportunity to discuss with your instructor what you are currently doing and what you would like to achieve in your lessons.  Maybe you would like to watch some further lessons prior to lunch. Food at the farm will be traditional Portuguese cuisine which has many Mediterranean influences and Olive oil is one of the bases of Portuguese cuisine, which is used both for cooking and flavouring meals. Garlic is widely used, as are herbs.  This evening enjoy dinner together with the group.

(B,L,D) Wednesday 22 May 2019

Today after your morning lesson the group will head off on a sightseeing excursion to the medieval town of Obidos, the beach at Foz do Orelho and to the town of Alcobaca famous for the Monastery of Alcobaça. In 2007 this World Heritage Gothic complex was declared one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and if we have time we may visit the wine museum.  Lunch will be at leisure today and we will return early evening prior to dinner. (Transport to visit the sights in Obidos and Alcobaca.  Entry fees and lunch is not included)

(B,L,D) Friday 24 May 2019

Today is the final day of lessons and you will be sad to say farewell to your mounts for the week. Tonight enjoy a final dinner with the group and celebrate any achievements and go over the weeks highlights.

(B,D) Friday 17 May 2019

This morning after breakfast we will visit the Portuguese riding School in Belem and view a training session.  The riders and horses are dressed in their traditional uniforms. Afterwards you may like to visit Jeronimos Monastery It’s one of the great triumphs of European Gothic (UNESCO has classified it a World Heritage monument), built in 1502 with much of the design characterized by elaborate sculptural details and maritime motifs. Opposite is the Torre de Belem a 16th-century tower which serves as a monument to Portugal’s Age of Discovery on both land and sea. This evening after a full day exploring the vibrant capital enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (Includes entry to training session at the Portuguese riding school, Tram pass and welcome dinner at a local restaurant).

(B,D) Sunday 19 May 2019
Lisbon – Sintra – Lourinha

This morning after breakfast we will leave Lisbon behind and visit Sintra. The town of Sintra offers elegant baroque churches, colourful mansions and the grand palaces of Lisbon’s elite who would come to escape the heat in the summer. The crowning glory above them all is Palacio de Pena, built by a German prince who married into the Portuguese royal family. It’s extensive gardens and colourful architecture make it a must visit place in Sintra. Later this afternoon we continue on to the Equestrian centre which will be your base for the week.  This evening enjoy dinner and a welcome drink. (Transfer from Lisbon via Sintra to the farm with entry into the Pena Palace)

(B,L,D) Tuesday 21 May 2019

Today you will continue to work on your goals for the week.  After your lesson, you may appreciate a dip in the pool, or perhaps discover the pleasures of the Portuguese afternoon “siesta”.  Later in the afternoon enjoy your second lesson. This evening you might like to join the group for a pre-dinner drink before enjoying dinner.

(B,L,D) Thursday 23 May 2019

As the week progresses so will your dressage, hopefully performing more advanced movements. Once your lessons are over (or between them) feel free to sit in the viewing area and continue to observe the other riders.
