ON THE TRAIL OF THE LIPIZZANER STALLIONS 2018
A “must-do” tour for lovers of this beautiful breed of horses
Join us in this leisurely-paced small-group tour that travels through the beautiful scenery of Austria and Slovenia. We’ll visit the “birthplace” of the Lipizzaners in Lipica (Slovenia), including a guided tour of the stud, a performance in the indoor arena and a carriage ride through the estate. En-route you will see wonderful scenery and visit the “Pearl of Slovenia’’, Lake Bled.
The current home of the Lipizzaner’s is the Federal Lipizzaner Stud in Piber, Austria. Here we have a private tour of the stables, riding arena, carriage museum and a carriage ride through the estate. In the afternoon we visit the mountain pastures where we see the young stallions that have been here throughout the summer. The tour will culminate with VIP seats at a gala performance in the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, followed by a private tour of the stables.
Along the way you will enjoy guided city tours in Salzburg, Postojna, Lipica, Piber and Vienna. There will be time to explore and will enjoy local food at some of the best restaurants.

Salzburg – Smartno
This morning we meet our tour driver and coach for the journey to Smartno in Slovenia. This rural community lies just west of the Julian Alps. The village is sometimes referred to as the “eagles nest” because of its domination over the countryside. Tonight, enjoy a special meal in your hotel – the San Martin.

Smartno – Postojna
We continue our journey through Slovenia to the township of Postojna where we check-in at the Hotel Jama. The hotel is located at the site of the famous Postojna Caves – one of the larger cave complexes in the world. Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the surrounding area. This evening enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Today the sightseeing is right on our doorstep. We will make a visit inside the mountain to see the wonders of this enormous cave formation. Our visit includes a train ride, walk of 2kms and a return train ride – all inside the mountain! After lunch we travel 10kms to visit Castle Cave and take a tour of this unique fortification. Dinner this evening will be at a local restaurant.

Ljubljana – Bled – Ljubljana
It’s a 45kms drive to Lake Bled – the “Pearl of Slovenia”. After arrival we’ll take a pletna boat ride across the lake to the only island in Slovenia. Time here to visit the church before returning to the shore. Lunch can be taken in a local restaurant before an optional visit to nearby Vintgar Gorge where there is a 1.6km walk through amazing rock formations. Those not wanting to do this can stay in Bled to enjoy the local area. Late afternoon we return to Ljubljana for dinner.

Our day starts with a visit to the Federal Stud Piber. Here we have a private tour of the stables, riding arena, carriage museum and a carriage ride through the estate. This afternoon we visit the mountain pastures where we see the young stallions that have been here throughout the summer. Dinner is at your own leisure this evening.

The highlight of our tour takes place today in the Spanish Riding School arena of the Hofburg. We have front row seats in both the VIP Box and the Royal Box (make your selection at time of booking). Following this amazing event – we have a guided tour of the city and a tour through the Palace of Schonbrunn. You are at leisure for your evening meal.

After breakfast we have a guided walking tour of the Old Town. You then have plenty of time to explore the narrow streets and shopping arcades. This evening the group enjoys a dinner in the St. Peterskeller restaurant and afterwards a medley of Mozart operettas performed by musicians and singers from the Salzburg Mozarteum.

A relaxing day today as we visit some wineries in the area. We’ll also visit the communities of Kobarid and Tolmin and visit a cheesemaking farm. The afternoon at leisure to enjoy the area around Smartno. Dinner at own expense this evening – and perhaps the group may like to eat in a restaurant in the old town.

Postojna – Lipica – Postojna
Today our first connection to the Lipizzaners. We’ll travel to nearby Lipica home of the stud farm where the first Lipizzaners were bred. Our visit will include a guided tour of the stud, a performance in the indoor arena and a carriage ride through the estate. Late afternoon we return to our hotel. Dinner is at your own expense this evening.

Postojna – Ljubljana (Slovenia)
After breakfast enjoy a short drive to the Slovenian capital where we will check-in to our hotel. The remainder of the day to enjoy sightseeing at leisure. You may want to visit the castle for a panoramic view over the city and surrounding area. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Ljubljana – Piber
We now depart for our second Lipizzaner connection – the Federal stud in Piber. En-route we cross the Karawanken Alps into Austria – and make a stop in the lakeside township of Velden on the Worthersee. After a stop for lunch we continue to our destination and check-in at the Hotel Herold. Dinner is at our hotel this evening.

Piber – Vienna
Today is the penultimate event of our tour. We drive just 3kms up the mountain from our hotel to the Gasthod Weindl. It’s here we’ll see the arrival of the young stallions where they are decorated for their procession down to the valley and blessing at the Church of Maria Lankowitz. Enjoy lunch before we depart for our final destination, the Austrian capital, and the Hotel de France. The evening meal will be taken in a local restaurant.

The highlight of our tour! A gala performance in the Spanish riding School!! We have secured front-row seats in the VIP Box and Royal Box in order to give you what we believe are the best views of the performance. Following the performance, we have a special guided tour of the stables, where you can meet some of the “stars” of the show. After time for lunch, we have a guided tour of Vienna and the beautiful palace of Schonbrunn. This evening at leisure to explore the historic centre of Vienna and eat at a local restaurant.
